I had two gas fires to install today. The first went well however the second was a non-starter.

My second client of the day had already purchased a new radiant gas fire and called me to come and swap it for an old unit which had been condemned. When I arrived and took a look at the old fire it turned out to be an OLD back boiler with a knackered radiant fire.

I explained that I couldn’t hook up the new fire to the old back boiler. He then told me that the old back boiler wasn’t hooked up as he had a combi boiler upstairs. I asked to see it and then everything became clear. The ‘plumber’ that hooked up the new boiler didn’r remove or disconnect the backboiler but instead left the water pipe work, gas and electrics all connected. The problem of course is that now to disconnect it means draining the entire system before the pipe work can be removed, the electrics are still live and require proper disconnection and the gas which is on lead pipe now requires removal and re-piping in copper if he wants a new radiant fire connected.

Another story of cowbows who’ve done only what they needed to to get the boiler installed and to get paid. The customer now faces about a days labour to properly remove and make safe the old system before he can install the new one. He’s just lucky that the old corroded boiler didn’t spring a leak (gas or water).
