I was called to install a new gas hob and double electric oven. I could not find an isolator for the electric oven nor could I find any properly sized breaker in the consumer unit for an electric oven. As it turns out the home-owner had previoulsy questioned the kitchen fitter who removed the original cooker isolation switch. He told her not to worry as she wouldn’t need it with this new (wizzy!) cooker. WRONG!They wired up her double oven with a piece of thick flex cable and then plugged the oven in to the house ring with a 13amp fused plug!! I asked if the Mini Circuit Breaker (MCB) ever popped and was told yes. It pops when you try and use both ovens together. The cooker should have been connected with a minimum of 6mm T&E to an accessible isolator switch and then wired back to a properly rated fuse at the consumer unit again using 6mm or 10mm T&E.
This is my first double award as the gas pipe work was also poorly installed. The pipes weren’t clipped and fell through the floor as soon as I unhooked the hob and someone had used water paste to coat the olives on the compression connectors before assembly. I can’t imagine why any professional would use paste on a compression connection. if it leaks FIX IT!Of course the point is that whoever did this clearly didn’t know what they were doing. The gas pipe work has now been clipped and and all other connectors removed, cleaned up and made safe before reconnection and tightness testing. The electric oven was left disconnected and the 13amp fuse to the hob replaced with the proper size of 3amp.
