istock_000003855335xsmall_0.jpg HAPPY NEW YEAR from everyone here at Advantis Home Maintenance. We are dedicated to doing our work to the highest standard without compromising quality or safety. Our BLOG has recently become a place that we can highlight poor workmanship and unsafe situations as well as a place to post the correct procedures for undertaking the type of work we do. Nobody is perfect and everybody makes mistakes at some time. We are not critical of certain small lapses in workmanship. We will never write up a missing earth shield on a double socket when the other twelve were done correctly. Simply put; if a contractor has the basic training and knowledge in the first place then working under the current building regulations, though a minefield at times can be accomplised.

In our daily work we do see the misery cowboy builders spread throughout the industry. There is usually a cost involved to repair the damage and then there is the cost of having it dome properly. I also have noticed a scary trend of ‘helpful’ forums popping up which give advice to DIYers. One home owner was recetly told that it was alright to remove a back boiler and put the fire back on afterwards! THAT IS NOT CORRECT and a CORGI Registered fitter or anyone else a with a brain larger than a walnut would not give such dangerous and life threatening advice. These chameleonic and anonymous experts are tarring us alll with the same brush. We can never stop them but we can fight back in our own way. This BLOG is my way.

The BLOG has become my way to show these bad works and also write about how the job should have been done correctly. In most cases the cowboy could have done the job correctly but lacked the knowledge or the drive to do it properly. It should be noted that we don’t go looking for these bad jobs as we are busy enough trying to run our business in tough economic times. We come across poor or unsafe work in our regular dealing with our customers. There will always be cowboy builders waiting to make a quick pound from the unsuspecting. I’m just trying to educucate the unsuspecting and hope that displaying the errors others have faced and giving proper advice can help some property owners avoid the problem altogether.

If you are a legitimate or licensed gas fitter, electrician or plumber you too can help. Reporting dangerous workmanship. It’s a pain in the backside and you will surely receive nothing for your time with one exception. When you report something that is likely to cause harm or has caused misery in someone’s life you will get a good feeling inside. I know what you’re thinking but if you don’t do it no one else will. I’m not asking you to report every little thing that you find. What I am talking about is the dangerous stuff! Flues that terminate into loft spaces spilling CO into the house, wiring that is so dangerous as to burn the house down. Report them, feel good, be a professional. If all of us report just one bad job a year we will in turn be cleaning up the overall image of each of our industries.

In the meantime this upcoming year I will be using the BLOG to highlight more cowboy builders and hopefully educate you on how to go about getting jobs done correctly and safely. Happy New Year.
