The home owner hired us to remove an old balanced flue boiler and replace it with a new condensing system boiler. While we were doing that they asked us to replace all radiators and move one radiator in the back bedroom. While moving the back room radiator we noticed that the old gravity feed system for the cylinder in the loft had been piped wrong. The mistake was made twenty years ago!
I asked if they had ever had heating issues in the back of the house and they said yes. They could never get the upstairs bedrooms warm. No wonder! The mistake we uncovered was that the gravity flow and return pipes to the storage cylinder left the boiler correctly but somewhere under the floor in the bedroom the original installers flipped the two pipes.
To further complicate this story, the return pipe from the central heating (which was piped correctly) shared the return pipe for the gravity hot water (which was now the flow pipe) the system would never work propery as it would always fighting itself.
We flipped the pipe work back around and also moved the radiator. They now have correctly working system with a highly efficient A rated boiler, the entire system has been flushed and we added new radiators and Thermostatic Radiator Valves.
The house gets warm quickly and efficiently.
