The winner this week is the rental flat which has been refurbed with metal light switches throughout with inadequate or no earthing. I like to think of un-earthed metal switch plates as giant heart paddles!

However if you don’t want to defibrillate your tenants or house mates then you should probabl earth all metal clad sockets, switches and light fixtures to enusre safety. The first picture shows the earthing (the black wire with yellow tape) wire wich was stranded and of inadequte size and inproperly colour coded.

Picture two shows that although there was an earthing conductor in the correct colour sheathing it wasn’t actually hooked up and was just laying in the box.

Worth noting also is the length of copper conducter showing at the connection block on all of the switches. The live and neutral conductor on all switches was cut too long and the wire was freely exposed.
