This fire was tested as part of a Landlord Gas Safety Check we were asked to undertake. The staining above the fire as can be seen in the first picture was a good indication that there was most likely a problem. The second photo shows what happened when we used a smoke match to test for spillage. What is spillage?
Spillage is one of the tests that a CORGI Registered gas fitter will undertake when checking your gas fire. It proves that the fire/flue is taking the products of combustion (Carbon Monoxide/Etc) out of the property. If the products of combustion are not removed via the flue then they SPILL into the room, thus spillage. If the Carbon Monoxide spills into the room and you and your family are in the room then you will most likely become ill very quickly and there is a good possibility that you’ll also die.
The fire shown above could easily have killed someone and we are still surprised that it didn’t. It failed the spillage test and when we removed the fire to inspect the flue we found that all of the brickwork behind and above the fire was also damaged from excessive heat. The heat from the fire could not escape either and thus burned so hot the brickwork cracked!
We called in our chimney sweep and he found that that the flue was completely blocked. It was cleaned out, we repaired the damaged brickwork and the damaged fire was also replaced. All was reassembled and tested and it functioned properly.
This fire is located in a rental property and the landlord had all gas appliances checked before the property was rented. He takes the safety of his tenants seriously which in cases like this one points out what could have hapened has he not cared. Follow the same rule and keep your tenants or family safe.
