When called in to find out why this back boiler was no longer heating the house we traced the problem to the electrics. When we pulled up the floorboards we were met with the nasty smell of stagnant water under the house. The water was about two inches deep and laying in the middle was the connector to the pump. The connector has obviously put up a big fight but in the end the system shorted out.
This is why electrics should never be left thrown down onto the dirt in a crawl space. Even though everything is dry at the time the work is done is no guarantee it will remain dry. Wet connectors and electricity don’t mix. IN the case of this boiler, the connector was replaced as well as a length of PVC cable further along which had melted.
