DANGER OF THE WEEK AWARD

Bad Electrics

Another week, another unsafe situation! We came across this un-earthed light fixture while sorting out another issue at a rental property. The tenant asked us if we could provide a new globe to cover the light bulb. We didn’t have to think about the answer. NO! The fixture was not safe for a bathroom and certainly not when it was almost directly over the tub.

We picked up the proper fitting and came back to remove the old fixture. What we found was even more unsafe than we had originally thought. The cable feeding the fixture was a piece of very brittle flexi cable which had hardened from excessive heat over the years. The earth cable was not attached at either end and the old fixture was heavily corroded.

We removed the old bits and replaced the broken cable with a piece of 1.5mm Twin & Earth, corrected the earth issue and mounted the assembly to the ceiling. It doesn’t really take much effort to get things right but you have to want to get things right.
