Last weeks winning Cowboy Of The Week is also this weeks winner too! We thought we had all of the problems sorted out on this bathroom renovation last week. We repaired unsafe electrics, plumbing that was bodged and likely to create future flooding issues, a bodged and leaking roof vent and UNSUPPORTED water damaged dry lining to the ceiling. So with all that work completed the bathroom was tiled and all appliances ready to refit. What else could go wrong?

I didn’t figure that attaching the toilet to the floor would be an issue but an issue it was. We dry fitted the toilet to the new bulkhead we had created to hide the waste pipe work and marked out the locations to attach the toilet to the wall and the floor. With the toilet temporarily removed we started drilling the CEMENT floor and after about 10mm the drill bit fell through the floor and buried itself to the chuck!

As it turned out the exact spot we needed to drill through to fasten down the toilet was the exact spot where some moron had packed fiberglass insulation into the floor before skimming over it with cement. Why? I don’t know. See the first four pics. We chiseled out all of the fiberglass/cement mixture and then after hoovering out the remaining rubble prepared to pour a new section which we would now have to let dry out before re-drilling.

End of story? I wish it were. The next morning we were showing the home owner some other issues we had with the floor and some type of glue or contact cement that the previous floor was held down with. Our issue was that we couldn’t remove it. With a wallpaper scrapper I was showing what we were doing and the big divot (six inches across) shown in the photo popped right out of the floor. See the last two pics. With a wall paper scrapper! We have since repaired that crater as well.

The only good news here is that the job is almost completed. With a  new floor being installed on Sunday we will be completed by Tuesday. Just in time for the Christmas break. Lovely.
