Berserk Pipe Work Quirk

Cowboy Gas Fitter - DANGER OF THE WEEK AWARD

Berserk pipe work quirk

This pipe work and the cables were boxed in behind a panel in a rental we went to look at recently. I would have hidden this work too if I had done it!! In fact I would have hidden the pipe work, changed my identity and moved far away as well. What kind of jerk would go to the effort of making this mess when a clean and tidy job would have taken about the same time or less? Read the rest of this entry »

Cowboy Plumber - DANGER OF THE WEEK AWARD

We recently moved our clients bathroom from it’s existing location to another room in the house. As we pulled up the old bathroom floor to remove pipe work we found this!

Hidden Junction Box A Crock

Cowboy Electrician - DANGER OF THE WEEK AWARD

The first picture (it’s a bit grainy) is of a switched spur on the wall and underneath that is a double socket. We were on site to modify the electrics for a kitchen refurb and when we opened the existing electrics we knew something was wrong as we couldn’t locate the ring main. As we started removing plaster to trace the wire back we found the hidden junction box shown in the second photo. The junction box was spliced into the actual ring main from where the spur and double socket were run.

We sorted the out the old circuit and ran a new ring for the kitchen which alleviated the original issues.

Retailers Help Drive Out Illegal Gas Installers

July 9th, 2008 No Gravatar

I hammer away relentlessly at cowboy builders, electricians, gas fitters and DIYers who attempt, and fail to work to CURRENT Building Regulations. So I have to applaud Plumbfix as well as Wolsely (Plumb Centre and Parts Centre) for their stand on supporting CORGI and CORGI Registered gas installers by limiting the sale of gas related products to the general public. It would be fantastic if more retailers got on the ball and stopped selling certain items such as gas hoses and other fittings used almost exclusively by gas fitters to anyone without an up-to-date CORGI card. Cowboy Gas Fitter - DANGER OF THE WEEK AWARD

The good news this week is that I was only witness to one poorly done installation. The bad news is that this is the worst type of short cut and I see it frequently. A past winner here. The reason I feel it’s so bad is the false sense of safety and security that people feel towards their boiler. That safe feeling is warranted if the boiler is installed correctly. If however the boiler is installed incorrectly then it’s a time bomb waiting to go off and no one can predict when!

Congestion Charging Manchester - Check Please!

July 1st, 2008 No Gravatar

Well, Reality Check please!

As a small home maintenance business trying to conduct business in an age of more and more stealth taxes I am not a big supporter of grandiose plans to drive me further out of the market place. The current multi million pound propaganda drive to convince us on how useful Congestion Charging will be to Manchester is a case in point. I personally feel something has to be done to ease congestion, well pollution actually, I’m not sure I agree that charging small businesses to enter the very city the public wish us to keep running is the way forward. How To Make It In A Slow Economy

June 29th, 2008 No Gravatar

I tell my contractor mates on a regular basis that they should follow up on everything they do. Not just quotes or estimates. If you undertake a Gas Safety Check for a client place their document in file dated eleven months from now and call them or send them a reminder. Once you find a client and they are happy with your work keep them close. Stay in contact.

Cowboy Plumbing - DANGER OF THE WEEK AWARD

Unfortunately the cowboy who extended this house didn’t extend the waste pipe to match! Whoever did the work was already awarded a previous Cowboy of the Week Award for an unsafe boiler installation. See the May 3, 2008 Cowboy Award. Read the rest of this entry »
