The delivery driver who was also going to hook up the new washer and take away the old had to abandon his idea. He was unable to locate the washing machine valves in order to turn off the water.  It was the old hidden hose trick! continue

Bad DIY ‘Electricians’

Regulations broken: BS7671:2008 Reg 411.3.1.2

We showed up to a plumbing call on Friday afternoon to install the hookups for a new washing machine. We knew that we would have to create a cold water feed and a new waste hookup. While getting ready to cut into the water pipe work we spied the earth cable shown below! continue

The owners also wanted to add an extractor unit at the same time. We found that the original housing that the cooker sat in was out of square and out of plumb so we had to remove the existing shelves which were pinned in place and adjust them to level. Also the electrical connections were incorrect and we sorted out those issues as well. continue

Bad Plumbing

We were replacing a faulty built in clothes washer with a new appliance for our client.

She gave us the history of the washer and the original installation.  The first installer had to come back thrice to repair a leaking drain hose. That was followed by a warranty repair a month later. But once the warranty repair was completed the washer was leaking again!

The repair person representing the manufacturer wrapped the joint in duct or duck tape and legged it! Not a unique solution and certainly not very professional. continue
