Location: Chadderton, Oldham, Lancs

Date: July 2009

Description: The owner of this home had already decided that he wanted a combi boiler installed before we arrived. They currently had a system boiler and showed us the one he wanted from a manufacturers brochure. We discussed several other options and the fact that the least expensive boiler wouldn’t necessarily produce the expected results. In the end we decided on a different manufacturer with a warranty that was four years longer than the one he had picked and a boiler which produced more litres per minute as required for his needs. Due to lack of storage space we found another location to install the boiler so that when we removed the tanks from the airing cupboard the entire space would now be usable.

The old system boiler was removed along with associated immersion and F&E tanks from the loft and airing cupboard. We also had to re-route some pipe work. The previous central heating engineer had also left us some extra work that he was too lazy to do himself. He had screwed in a wet copper heating element into the hole usually used by an electric immersion element and left the primary coil hooked up to the old lead pipe work which probably ran to an old back boiler arrangement. We planned ahead just in case the pipe work was full of water and fortunately for us we did. The old lead pipes were still VERY full of stagnate water after twenty years. Thanks!

Once everything was removed we installed the new Viessmann 100-W 30kW combi boiler into a utility room at the rear of the property and started re-routing the gas and the flow and return pipe work. The hot and cold where already in place for the cloths washer. Once the flue was in we spliced in a spur to the house ring main. We had one more job to do which was a radiator swap in one of the bedrooms upstairs. We had already flushed the entire system so put in the new radiator and were ready to fill the system and start commissioning. The entire system was completed in only a few days and the home owner is saving money due to an efficient and properly sized boiler.

As we are authorised Viessmann installers we added an additional two years to their standard three year warranty so the home owner is now enjoying the luxury a FIVE year parts and labour warranty on the boiler and a ten year warranty on the heat exchanger.
[[Show as slideshow]]

Description: Although this boiler was working it was on its last legs. The owner also requested that we mount the boiler as high up as it could go to allow for a later kitchen remodel. Due to safety issues and building regulations we managed (just barely) to get the boiler up high enough for the new kitchen work surfaces to extend from wall to wall.

The old boiler was replaced with a Viessmann 100-W 26kW combi boiler which is perfect for a small flat with only a small bathroom and kitchen. We removed the old appliance and had the new one in place the same day. We did have to return the following day to due some brickwork as it was raining so hard on the first day that the mortar would have been washed away.

As we are authorised Viessmann installers we added an additional two years to their standard three year warranty so the flat owner is now enjoying the luxery a FIVE year parts and labour warranty on the boiler and a ten year warranty on the heat exchanger. Not bad for a days work!
[[Show as slideshow]]

When called to install a new hot water and heating system to a flat in Manchester we arrived to find the non-functioning un-vented cylinder in a state of dis-repair. The home made control box shown here contained all manner of connections that were poorly made with lots of exposed and live wire hanging loose. These wires were all carrying 240 volts and were fused at 32amps.

Technically it could all be repaired, but why so complicated? The rats nest of cables should have been neatly installed with the relay properly mounted. The end result was that we deemed the installation unsafe as it did not comply many current (and older) regulations. The installation has since been re-designed to operate safely.

Working on un-vented cylinders when you don’t know what you’re doing can be a risky gamble. The gamble is with the lives of those around when it blows up. In most cases the in built safeties will kick in if the cylinder overheats, but not always. That’s why there are several layers of safety designed into a correctly designed and installed system.Don’t hire anyone who cannot prove that they are qualified to work on un-vented cylinders. In most cases ask to see thier CORGI or Gas Safe Register card and it will state on the back of the card if they are qualified.

When called in to find out why this back boiler was no longer heating the house we traced the problem to the electrics. When we pulled up the floorboards we were met with the nasty smell of stagnant water under the house. The water was about two inches deep and laying in the middle was the connector to the pump. The connector has obviously put up a big fight but in the end the system shorted out.

This is why electrics should never be left thrown down onto the dirt in a crawl space. Even though everything is dry at the time the work is done is no guarantee it will remain dry. Wet connectors and electricity don’t mix. IN the case of this boiler, the connector was replaced as well as a length of PVC cable further along which had melted.

Description: Our client had already purchased the new fire and asked us to see if they could install it into the existing chimney. Fortunately the location previously had a back boiler and was in good shape with the proper gas pipe work already in place. The flue and terminal also looked good so we proceeded. The fire really made a difference to the room and looks fantastic.
[[Show as slideshow]]

Description: A complete bathroom refurbishment was the requirement here. In fact the homeowners went away for a week while we completed the work. We started the rip out as they were departing and by the time they arrived home we were done with the exception of a few trim pieces. The bathroom boasts underfloor heating too!
[[Show as slideshow]]
