This weeks winner was uncovered while on site to undertake an unrelated and simple plumbing job. Upon arrival at the property I noticed two flues (one boiler for hot water and another boiler for central heating) emerging from the brickwork. This quick look while walking up the drive uncovered several safety sissues that need to be resolved. continue
Location: Eccles, Gtr. Manchester, Lancs
Date: June 2009
Description: The complaint was that the hot water ran at full pressure for about thirty seconds and then would slow down to nothing. Over a period of months the slow down had become worse until only a few seconds worth of water would flow before there was nothing more than a drip. We arrived to view the problem and after checking out the gravity hot water and the pumped central heating made our decision. continue

Bad Heating Engineers…The Sequel
In our last visit to this Manchester flat as highlighted in a previous
Cowboy Of the Week Award we were on the hunt for a rogue leak. The flat had stains on all ceilings throughout the four floor new build terraced properties which were all aligned with the properties main waste pipe. We sorted out a previous issue with a constant flowing Pressure Relief Valve and still suspected a leak in the pipe work within the walls even though everything had dried up. We new that if the system ever became over pressurised that the leak would show up again. So it was time to become a detective.

Bad Heating Engineers (Lots of them!)
This weeks cowboy award goes to the installers and service engineers of a heating system which has been plagued with problems since it was installed three years ago in a new build townhouse in Manchester City Centre. This one really highlights just how badly things can go wrong when a properly designed system is installed by inept engineers and then looked after by another team of inept engineers. Our fist view of the building was when we were invited around to try and find a leak believed to be coming from an upstairs shower. The signs of leakage could be seen through the three floors directly beneath the en-suite that contained the shower.

Bad Electricians
Having read my
previous story about an un-vented cylinder repair in the Northern Quarter a flat owner called to get help with a similar problem. It all kicked off when the RDC at the flat starting tripping and shutting off the power to the flat. The flat owner called an electrician who found the immersion heater was causing the problem and promptly switched it off. The electrician then said he could repair the problem but would have to drain the tank to change the element. He turned off the cold water supply to the flat and drained the tank. Once the tank was empty he removed the damaged element and discovered that the replacement he brought with him didn’t fit. Now that shouldn’t be a problem. But it is was for this guy!
