DANGER OF THE WEEK AWARD
Bad Electricians…
The home owner told me that the electrician who did this work was recommended by the builder who was adding a conservatory. An electrician he may have been but his work was sloppy and unsafe. This guy just didn’t care about the safety of the home owners and their children.

Bad DIYers…
So you drive down to Ikea or B&Q and pick up a nice looking light fixture for your bathroom. You get home and turn off the bathroom electrics (we hope!) and then remove the current fitting. You’re not sure what you’re doing so you hook up the wires in a way that seems logical. Red/brown to red/brown and black/blue to black/blue. As you don’t know that the symbol for earthing is where the bare copper wires or the green/yellow stripe wire should connect so they don’t get connected. And here is where the potential for electrocution start.

Bad Electricians…
It is important to point out here that anybody who pushes low voltage cables (240 volts AC) through metal back boxes or metal light fixtures should always use PVC grommets; and here’s why!

Bad DIY
This job had a lot going on. We were asked to move a kitchen from one room to another which meant upgrading the consumer unit to comply with current building regulations, the central heating controls also required moving from the old kitchen to a closet and there were lots of plumbing issues too. The worst issues we had to sort out was this set of clamp on lights in the bathroom which were wired through a false ceiling and not at all compliant or safe.

Bad Builders…Maybe?
Actually, in this case we don’t know who, why, or when this job was done. From the winner of last weeks award
[See Award Here] comes this weeks award. Last week we showed you some unsafe outside wiring that ran from a non-RCD’d wire fuse box to a shed, some outdoor security lighting (with no fused spurs), an old step down low voltage light transformer and finally a feed to an old pond that no longer worked. We were also asked to change a coach lantern that had not worked since the home owner moved in.

Bad Electrical Work
Another week and another BLOB of taped up electrical connectors! This cowboy also forgot to sleeve and terminate the earth, add a proper cover and allow for strain relief on the cables, oh and improper ventilation. But I suspect that he didn’t allow for doing the job correctly as he was probably the same guy that dry lined the dropped ceiling and just added the recessed down-lights because he thought he knew how? I’m guessing that he didn’t.

Bad Electricians
The first Cowboy Award of the year has been a tough one to decide. We’ve found so many unsafe jobs this week that we could have had five winners! The one we chose however was this one.
We were adding some loft lighting in advance of a boiler move that we will be doing next month. As we attempted to isolate the upstairs lighting circuit however we had a problem. After removing all of the 5 amp fuses the lights were still on! When we removed the 20amp immersion fuse the lights went out.
