One of the responsibilities of the plumber or gas fitter when installing a boiler or in this case a hot water heater is to try and ensure that the system is safe and maintainable.

The pipe work shown to the right is what happens when pipes aren’t insulated. In the last month of below normal temperatures pipe work that wasn’t properly lagged is now starting to split. These four pieces were replaced last week. To make matters worse the hot water heater wasn’t protected either!

The cracked housing shown to the left usually sits just above the water mixing assembly. This system froze so badly that the aluminium housing was cracked.

Unfortunately the housing also contains the gas vale assembly and so it too had to be replaced. The outcome was several hundred pounds because a few quids worth of pipe lagging wasn’t fitted and the boiler wasn’t protected from freezing in any way shape or form.

A few minutes worth of planning before the original installation had taken place would have saved wasted money in repairing this unit.

This weeks award is hard to see in this picture but was crystal clear when trying to repair a faulty pilot assembly. If you look closely at the ring that holds in the pilot burner assembly and you’ll see that is has deep scratch marks in it.

The reason is that the ring doesn’t actually fit this water heater and has been forced into place in order to get it to work at some point in the past. We discovered the problem when called out to service the unit when it wouldn’t light.

The replacement parts we ordered for this LPG multi point water heater could not be used due to the damage caused from a previous repair. We had to replace the complete burner assembly in order to get the system working the way the designer had intended. The cost was also about ten times more than it should have been due to the extra parts that had to be  installed.

Bad Builders

We were surprised to find this little gem when called to do a gas safety for a client we’ve known for a few years.

Since our last visit they had decided to add some ventilation so called out a builder with a saw and let him loose. Unfortunately for everyone the builder didn’t have a clue about gas safety so cut a vent hole too close to this balanced flue.

The fix for this repair was to close both sides of the opening so flue gas cannot be pulled in during periods of negative air pressure. In other words, when the wind blows on a building it can cause a negative effect, or back-draft, on other vents in the building. The last thing you want is carbon monoxide being sucked into your office, home, etc!

Description: Back again to keep this multi point water heater up and running for one of the food vendors at the ManUTD Stadium. This boiler was undergoing a yearly safety check and a service. No problems found with this hard working water heater.

Description: One of our favourite jobs is keeping many of the food vendors at the ManUTD Stadium up and running. We usually get little notice when there is a problem and do our best to sort things out quickly. This boiler required some new parts and a service. This multipoint hot water heater continues to keeps hands and pots clean during events.
